Isolation of Hydrogen Sulfide Producing Escherichia coli and Salmonella paratyphi-A

Abstract
Escherichia coli is known to produce hydrogen sulfide(H2S) very rarely, while up to 10% of Salmonella paratyphi-A strains are said to produce H, S. From an urine specimen of a 28-year-old woman a strain of E. coli was isolated. The isolate showed typical characteristics of E. coli with the exception of abundant HS production in TSI agar. From blood and stool specimens of a 22-year-old woman S. paratyphi-A was isolated. The isolate produced large amount of H,S in ISI agar. Other biochemical characteristics and somatic and flagella antigens were typical of S paratyphi-A. HS-producing E coli is definitely rare considering the isolate was the only one among the more than 13,000 isolates at Yonsei Medical Center(YMC) since 1974. Contrary to Western literature, HZ S-producing S paratyphi-A seems to be rare in Korea. It was the only isolate with H, S production in TSI agar among the over 320 isolates at YMC since 1974.
